7 Free Things To Do With Your Family In Minnesota

Minnesota, known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” offers a treasure trove of adventures for families exploring on a budget. In our own journey aboard our beloved double decker RV, we’ve embraced the frugal yet fabulous lifestyle, finding joy in the simple, cost-free experiences that enrich our family time together. Today, I’m sharing some of our favorite free activities that we stumbled upon during our wanderings in Minnesota.

1. Walk Around Minneapolis Sculpture Garden

A whimsical sculpture within the gardens

One of Minnesota’s iconic spots is the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, showcasing over 40 permanent art installations. The centerpiece is the famous ‘Spoonbridge and Cherry’ sculpture, a perfect background for those Instagram family snapshots. It acts as not just a playground for art aficionados but also a delightful picnic area for families. You’ll see us embracing our creativity, discussing the quirky sculptures which is a fantastic way to fuel the kids’ imagination.

2. Explore the Como Park Zoo & Conservatory

Our family has a soft spot for animals, and we found the perfect spot at Como Park Zoo & Conservatory. One could spend hours meandering through this haven of wildlife without spending a dime. Although admission is free, a small donation is encouraged to support the facility. We engaged in educational talks about conservation, and the kids got up-close to gorillas, giraffes, and lions, oh my!

3. Visit the Minnesota State Capitol

History comes to life at the Minnesota State Capitol, a must-do on any educational road trip. The Capitol offers free guided tours, which provide an in-depth look at the art, architecture, and history of this stunning building. The kids and I were fascinated by the grandiosity of the Capitol and its place in US history.

4. Enjoy Nature at Minnehaha Regional Park

The rushing waters of Minnehaha Falls surrounded by green foliage

Minnehaha Regional Park is home to the breathtaking Minnehaha Falls and is one of our favorite outdoor spots in Minnesota. Every season offers a new way to see the falls, whether it’s the lush green of summer or the frozen majesty of winter. The park also provides ample space for children to run around and play. We packed a lunch and spent the whole day there, marveling at how nature provides the best kind of entertainment.

5. Take the Scenic Route on the Mississippi River Parkway

Driving our Double Decker RV along the Mississippi River Parkway is an experience to behold. The Great River Road National Scenic Byway winds through 10 states, offering mesmerizing views and a sense of tranquility. Minnesota’s section of the Parkway is rich with panoramic vistas and wildlife sightings. It’s a picturesque drive that we took slowly, stopping for photo ops and to let the children soak in the sights.

6. Indulge in Literary Adventure at the Minneapolis Central Library

On a particularly chilly day, we retreated to the comfort of the Minneapolis Central Library. With a special children’s area and teen zone, there’s something for everyone. Their collection is vast, and the kids’ story hours provided both entertainment and a peaceful respite from our bustling travel routine. It was a serene afternoon filled with the joy of reading and the charm of a space that cherishes knowledge.

7. Bicycle or Hike the Gateway State Trail

Last on our list, but certainly not least, is the Gateway State Trail, a 18-mile stretch connecting St. Paul to Stillwater. We had the chance to hike part of this trail, reveling in the diverse landscapes it traversed. Whether on bike or foot, the trail gave us the chance to be active together and witness Minnesota’s natural beauty firsthand.

Incorporating free family activities into our travel itinerary is not only budget-friendly; it also enriches our family’s journey with priceless memories. From art and history to nature and literature, Minnesota brims with opportunities that don’t come with a price tag.

Bonus Tip: Going to these places may be free, but always remember to check for parking fees or suggested donations. It’s always good to have a little spare change on hand for unexpected costs that might come up during your adventure.

And that’s a wrap on our list of free family-friendly activities in Minnesota. I hope this provides some inspiration for your next family outing or road trip in this versatile state. Remember, travel is not just about the destinations, but the experiences and learning opportunities you share with your loved ones.
