Benefits of Oatmeal Baths

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, “itchy, dry skin often has a high pH level.”   Oatmeal is one of those foods that can help normalize the pH.  Oats are rich in beta-glucans which activate immune cells.  Oats are also rich in saponins.  These saponins give oatmeal the cleansing, moisturizing and soothing effect.  Oatmeal baths can:

  1. Soften and moisturize the skin
  2. Reduce inflammation
  3. Reduce the signs of aging
  4. Eliminate acne
  5. Reduce itching

Oatmeal is so mild it can be used on all ages even your pets.  It’s great for a pet with dry skin.

How to take an Oatmeal Bath

Grid 1 cup rolled oats (not quick oats) with a food processor.  Grind until it becomes a fine powder.  Run luke warm water in the tub.  Hot water can make the skin dry.  There are 2 options:

  1. Spread the oatmeal directly in the tub
  2. Place the oatmeal in a cheese clothe sack then put it in the tub

If you don’t want the mess of putting the oatmeal directly in the tub then use the cheese clothe method.  Squeeze the pouch occasionally.  Also add a few drops of essential oil that is good for the skin such as:  Lavender, Geranium, or Chamomile.
Oatmeal baths have been so helpful for my kids when they had dry, itchy skin.  My daughter also suffered from hives last year.  Oatmeal and essential oils were a big help! Give it a try!

I'm going to have to try this. I have given my dog an oat mill bath for itching and it seemed to help her.
