Title: Can You See Devil’s Tower From I-90? A Double Decker RV Adventure
Hello, fellow adventurers! Dane here from the Double Decker Fam, hustling along the open road in our converted Double Decker RV with my beautiful wife and our squad of six energetic kids. Last week, we had our sights set on one of America’s most iconic rock formations – Devil’s Tower in Wyoming. And the question on everyone’s mind was: can you actually catch a glimpse of this geological wonder while cruising on Interstate 90?
In today’s blog, we’re going to share our experience and give you the lowdown on whether you can see Devil’s Tower from I-90, along with a few tips to make your visit utterly memorable.
Can You See Devil’s Tower from I-90?
As much as we would love to give you a one-word answer, it’s not quite that simple. The truth is, Devil’s Tower is visible from certain parts of I-90, but the views are fleeting and largely dependent on the weather and your exact location on the interstate.
According to Travel Wyoming, Devil’s Tower is situated about 33 miles northeast of Sundance. When you’re approaching exit 153 near Sundance, you can catch a glimpse of Devil’s Tower on a clear day if you look north. However, the view is distant and not the full-fledged experience you get from being up close.
For the best view, I recommend detouring off I-90 at exit 154 (State Highway 14) and adventuring on the scenic US 14 for a more direct and intimate view of the tower. And honestly, folks, the detour is worth it – our family can attest to that!
The Journey to Devil’s Tower
Taking the detour off I-90 was an adventure in itself. We meandered through the rustic landscapes Wyoming is famed for, while our little ones played eye spy with local wildlife and the dreamy backdrops. Being in the Double Decker RV means we always have a great vantage point, and the kids were practically glued to the windows, trying to be the first to shout “There it is!”
Our RV is pretty spacious, but I have to say, packing the whole family and all our necessities is always a Tetris game. If you’re planning a family RV trip, make sure to check out our RV Packing Tips for Large Families – it could save you some space and sanity!
Experiencing Devil’s Tower
When we finally arrived at the entrance to Devil’s Tower National Monument, the collective “wow” from the kids was worth every minute of the extra drive. The towering rock stood majestically before us, and it felt like we had just entered a fantasy novel.
This impressive igneous intrusion, which rises a staggering 1,267 feet above the Wyoming countryside, is a sight to behold. Geologists and sightseers alike flock to this site for its unique geological characteristics and imposing presence. The National Park Service offers great resources on Devil’s Tower’s geological significance and its cultural history.
For families specifically, visiting Devil’s Tower is more than just a tick on a travel list – it’s an educational journey. Kids learn about Native American legends surrounding the tower and the prairie ecosystem supporting a diverse array of wildlife, from prairie dogs to birds of prey.
We spent the day hiking some family-friendly trails, such as the Tower Trail, which gave us a 360-degree view of the tower and the Belle Fourche River valley below. Seeing Devil’s Tower from this vantage point was an entirely different experience from the fleeting glimpse on I-90. It commanded respect and sparked imagination in a way that only a physical presence can.
Tips for Visiting Devil’s Tower with a Large Family
- Plan Ahead: Especially when traveling with a tribe like ours, I always recommend looking ahead for campsite reservations or accommodations. Sites fill up quickly during peak season, and nothing dampers a day of fun like the struggle to find a place to sleep. Check out the Devil’s Tower KOA, which offers plenty of room for RVs and a stunning view of the tower.
-
Pack Snacks and Water: Trails and exploration will definitely work up an appetite. We keep the kids satisfied and hydrated with healthy snacks and water bottles to avoid any hangry situations.
-
Bring Entertainment: Sometimes, journeys can be lengthy, especially off the interstate. We have a selection of audio books and car games to keep spirits high during the drive.
-
Educate and Engage: Before visiting, we like to educate our children about the place we’re going to. National Geographic Kids has wonderful resources and articles about Devil’s Tower that got my little ones excited and ready to learn!
-
Capture Memories: Don’t forget a decent camera or smartphone to snap some amazing photos. The landscapes around Devil’s Tower are picture-perfect, and, speaking from experience, these are moments you’ll want to remember.
Final Thoughts: Is the Detour Worth It?
Absolutely. While you might get a sneak peek of Devil’s Tower from I-90, taking the time to get closer offers a much grander and immersive experience. For our family, the detour became a highlight of our trip, overflowing with learning experiences and awe-inspiring sights.
Traveling as a full-time RV family, we’ve learned that the journey is just as important as the destination. And sometimes, it’s the unplanned detours that create the most cherished memories.
As we pack up and set our sights on the next destination, we’re reminded by the kids that adventures are waiting for us just around the next bend. And we can’t wait to share them all with you.
Until next time, keep exploring, and be sure to tag along with the Double Decker Fam on our social channels – Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok – for live updates and behind-the-scenes looks into our life on the road.
Until our paths cross on the trail or the interstate, safe travels!
