One of the most enchanting offers of Fort Robinson is its variety of trails. Whether on foot, horseback, bike, or even in a jeep, there’s a path for everyone. We took the kids on a couple of the easier trails and were enthralled by the awe-inspiring landscapes. Remember to bring plenty of water, snacks and, of course, your camera to snap some family memories amidst the backdrop of the rugged buttes.
One can’t-do-miss experience is wildlife spotting. Bison, bighorn sheep, and prairie dogs are often in the spotlight here. We had a blast quietly observing these creatures in their natural habitat, and our little ones learned a thing or two about the ecosystem. And while you’re tucked away from the big city lights, don’t forget to look up at night. Fort Robinson offers one of the clearest night skies for stargazing. It was an otherworldly experience for our kids to see more stars than they’ve ever imagined. Just grab a blanket, some hot cocoa, and let the universe reveal its wonders.
Experience History Up Close
At the Fort Robinson Museum, history buffs in your family can get their fix. Exhibits walk you through the rich past of the area, including the story of the Red Cloud Indian Agency. Our family was captivated by the tales of the soldiers and Native Americans who lived and battled in these lands.
Another must-do is the tour of the historic buildings. From the 1905 brick barracks to the 1887 Adobe Officers’ Quarters, you feel like you’re stepping into another era. Plus, it’s an excellent opportunity for your kids to learn and stretch their imaginations.

If you ask my kids, the highlight of our stay was horseback riding. There’s something special about trotting through the scenic landscapes on horseback, just like explorers from centuries ago. Local stables offer guided tours, and there’s even pony rides for the little ones.
Alternatively, kick back and enjoy a stagecoach ride – it’s an authentic way to travel back in time while enjoying the stunning scenery of the park. It’s a relaxing break from the modern world and a hit among our family – smiles all around!

Agate Fossil Beds National Monument
Just an hour’s drive from Fort Robinson is the Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, a paleontological site with well-preserved Miocene fossils. Not only did the kids enjoy the interactive exhibits, but we adults found ourselves fascinated by the ancient animals that once roamed these lands.
Carhenge
Yes, you read that right – Carhenge. This unique roadside attraction, located in Alliance, Nebraska, is a quirky replica of England’s Stonehenge but made with vintage cars. Just about an hour and a half drive from the state park, it’s a sight that not only prompts a chuckle but is ripe for some unique family photos. Learn about its creation and details here.
The Museum of the Fur Trade
For a dose of local commerce history, the Museum of the Fur Trade is about an hour’s drive away in Chadron, Nebraska. It offers an intimate look at the trade goods used by Native Americans and the fur trade industry. A great way to combine education with entertainment – our kids left with a better understanding of the region’s economic development.
