Headwaters Campground at Flagg Ranch – Reviewed

By Dane Eyerly, Double Decker Fam

Camping between Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks isn’t just about finding a place to park the RV—it’s about experiencing one of the most breathtaking landscapes America has to offer. Our family of 8 hits the road full-time in a Double Decker RV, so we’ve developed a sense for the best (and a few of the worst) places to set up home. If you’re considering a stay at Headwaters Campground at Flagg Ranch, read on for our full review based on our recent visit with our crew of six kids, ages 10 to 5 (yes, including twins)!

Why Choose Headwaters Campground at Flagg Ranch?

Situated almost perfectly between Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, Headwaters Campground at Flagg Ranch offers an unbeatable basecamp for families eager to explore the wild beauty of Wyoming. The question for us, and probably for you: Is it family friendly? Is it really convenient? What do you need to know before you book? Here’s what we found out.

Location, Location, Location

First off: The LOCATION is the real star here. Headwaters sits right on the banks of the Snake River, surrounded by lodgepole pines and wild silence. You are about 2 miles south of Yellowstone’s South Entrance and 53 miles north of Jackson, WY, putting both parks within easy striking distance, which is perfect for active families who don’t want to drive hours each day to see wildlife, geysers, and glaciers.

We loved waking up able to decide—do we want to spend the day in Grand Teton, on the lakes, wildlife spotting around Oxbow Bend, or head north to the steamy geyser basins and waterfalls of Yellowstone? You don’t have to choose one or the other because you’re smack dab in the middle. This convenience is a game-changer, especially with a van full of kids who need frequent snacks and bathroom breaks.

Booking and Check-In: What You Need to Know

A heads up: Headwaters Campground books up FAST, especially in peak summer months. You can make reservations online via the official Yellowstone National Park Lodges site.

Pro Tips for Booking:

  • Reservations open six months in advance. Plan ahead!
  • Full hookups (water, electric, sewer) AND dry camping sites are available. Double check which you’re booking—we needed hookups for our double decker and appreciated the easy access.
  • RV size: Most sites accommodate up to 45’, but double check for longer rigs or unique builds.
  • Check-in is at the Flagg Ranch main office. The staff was genuinely friendly (shoutout to Cindy, who welcomed our chaos with a smile). You’ll get a map and clear instructions.

Campsite: Layout and Amenities

There are 175 sites at Headwaters—some with hookups, some without. Our family sized up the perks (and a few pitfalls):

What We Loved:

  • Space: The sites are pretty generous for national park standards. Our huge rig, which often feels like trying to park a school bus in a regular lot, fit with room to spare. The kids had space to run and play safely near the site.
  • Facilities: Recently upgraded restrooms with flush toilets and warm showers (big win after a long hiking day). Showers are included with your campsite, which saves us at least $30 over a week with our crew!
  • Bear safe food storage: Every site has its own bear box.
  • Picnic tables and fire rings: S’mores supply is a must!
  • Quiet hours were respected, and we felt safe letting our kids bike and scooter around under our supervision.

Room for Improvement:

  • Cell signal: Weak to non-existent. We rely on Starlink for work, and even that was patchy under the lodgepole pines (though better towards the entrance).
  • Shade: Some sites have more shade than others. Ours was sunny most of the day, which was fine in the cool spring, but could get hot in July and August.
  • Mosquitoes: You’re camping near water. Bring spray!

Note:

There are no laundry facilities at Headwaters—plan accordingly. Colter Bay Campground in Grand Teton has coin-op laundry, about 30 minutes south.

Accessibility for Large Families

It’s easy for big families like us to stick out, especially in the world of RVing. The staff at Headwaters made us feel right at home.

  • Firewood is sold on site.
  • Multiple restrooms/shower houses are spread throughout the campground (and they’re pretty clean, which is always a relief!).
  • Play areas: While there isn’t an official playground, the terrain is flat and safe for kids to explore with a bit of parental oversight.
  • Trails: There are several short hikes and pathways right from the campground. Ranger-led programs were offered (check the schedule at check-in), which the kids LOVED—nothing beats a junior ranger badge!

Double Decker Fam’s Yellowstone & Grand Teton Tips

No family travel blog would be complete without a few tried-and-true tricks:

  1. Fuel up before arrival: The only gas at Headwaters is typically $1-2/gallon higher than in Jackson or the valley.
  2. Groceries: There’s a small camp store for essentials, but for a family of eight, stock up in Jackson or at the larger shops around Yellowstone’s West Entrance (see NPS recommendations here).
  3. Bear country rules: Teach kids to make noise on trails, and ALWAYS lock up food.
  4. Explore early: The best wildlife viewing is just after sunrise. We had an epic otter sighting right behind camp!
  5. Bring bikes and scooters: Paved lanes loop the campground—a fantastic outlet for young energy.

Wi-Fi and Connectivity: Can You Still Work Remote?

As a social media influencer, internet access is crucial. If you rely on Wi-Fi (or need to upload that perfect family sunset photo), plan ahead.

  • Headwaters Wi-Fi is only accessible in the main lodge and is very slow.
  • Cell service: Verizon offers a couple bars at the entrance, but almost nothing in camp.
  • Satellite internet (like Starlink) varies depending on tree cover. We sometimes had to drive to an overlook for uploads.

If you need to work remotely (guilty!), consider combining your stay here with a few nights in Jackson or another area where the internet is more dependable.

The Best Part: Wildlife Right Out Your Door

One of our most magical family moments was an early morning walk along the Snake River trail behind our campsite. We spotted a moose cow and her calf feeding just across the water, while bald eagles swooped overhead. It’s not uncommon to see bison, elk, or mule deer nearby, sometimes even in the campground itself. Keep kids close and always be aware—wildlife is, well, wild here!

For added family fun, stop at the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve in Grand Teton for hands-on exhibits and easy trails, or ask about the Junior Ranger program booklets when you arrive.

Pros & Cons Checklist

We always keep it real for fellow RV families! Here’s a quick breakdown:

Pros:

  • Perfect location for exploring both Yellowstone & Grand Teton
  • Spacious sites (big rig–friendly)
  • Modern bathrooms and (included!) showers
  • Easy, beautiful access to river and trails
  • Quiet, dark nights—amazing stargazing
  • Friendly, helpful staff accustomed to families

Cons:

  • Little to no cell signal or reliable internet
  • No laundry on site
  • Grocery selection/prices limited
  • Some sites can be sunny in peak summer
  • Mosquitoes in early summer

Final Thoughts: Would We Stay Again?

Absolutely! Headwaters Campground at Flagg Ranch is one of the most strategically located, family-friendly RV and tent campgrounds near both Yellowstone and Grand Teton. While a few challenges (connectivity, groceries, and laundry) mean it’s not a perfect “home base” for weeks on end, we give it two thumbs up for a 3-5 night stay while you’re adventuring in the parks.

If you’re like us and want to maximize your time OUTSIDE, Headwaters offers a balance of comfort and wild beauty you just can’t find at most commercial RV parks. So load up the s’more kits, charge those cameras, and get your littles ready for some memories your family will never forget.
