How Many Days Do I Need To Visit Voyageurs National Park

Title: How Many Days Do I Need To Visit Voyageurs National Park?

Today, I’m going to dive into a true gem of the Midwest—Voyageurs National Park.

Planning a visit to a national park as grand as Voyageurs can be overwhelming, especially when trying to determine just how many days you should allocate to explore its vast wilderness. Well, fear not! After our family’s unforgettable experience in this water-centric park, I’m here to give you the scoop on what to expect and how to optimize your time.

Day 1: Arrival and Exploration

When our family first set foot (or wheels) in Voyageurs National Park, the sense of awe was palpable. Nestled in northern Minnesota, just below the Canadian border, our first day was all about settling in. We recommend arriving early because the park is not a quick drive-through experience. Check out the visitor centers like the Ash River Visitor Center to get the lay of the land.

During your first day, you may not have heaps of time for activities, but an enjoyable thing to do is to dine at one of the nearby local eateries. We all know feeding the troops is crucial, especially after a travel day.

Day 2: Boating and Water Activities

This park is truly unique. Voyageurs is a water-based park, which means that over one-third of its area is water! Renting a boat or joining a guided tour is practically a must-do. Don’t miss spots like Kabetogama Lake and Rainy Lake, both perfect for boating, kayaking, and even fishing. If you’re visiting in summer, dip your toes in for a swim—yes, the water’s fine, even this far north!

Day 3: Hiking and Wildlife Watching

With over 50 miles of hiking trails, your third day can be an exciting trek through the boreal forests. The Ellsworth Rock Gardens trail and the Cruiser Lake Trail are good starting points. Keep an eye out for bald eagles, moose, and black bears—just remember to observe from a safe distance and respect their habitat.

Best get up early this day because our crew learned the hard way that daylight is a precious commodity, especially if you’re keeping pace with young explorers!

Day 4: Cultural and Historical Sightseeing

The history of Voyageurs is as rich as the lakes are deep. Book a tour to explore the historically significant sites such as Ellsworth and Kettle Falls, which tell the stories of the Indigenous people, fur traders, and early settlers. Be prepared as these require boat access as well!

Day 5: Relaxation and Star Gazing

By day five, our family loves to take it easy, and Voyageurs is the perfect place for that. Picnicking on the visitor center grounds or on one of the hundreds of islands dotted across the park is a delightful way to spend a calm day.

But as dusk falls, don’t pack up just yet. Voyageurs National Park is also a certified Dark Sky Park. Bundle the kiddos up and gaze at the stars—it’s a stargazing haven and a perfect end to a busy day.

Day 6: Canoeing and Closure

Canoeing is another must-do. Either on your own with rented canoes or on a guided excursion, paddling through the interconnected waterways gives a closer view of the serenity and raw beauty of this park. It’s a silent homage to the voyageurs of the past.

Before winding down your visit, make sure you’ve had a good campground experience as well. The kids always love sharing ghost stories by the fire (all in good fun, of course)!

Are 6 Days Enough for Voyageurs National Park?

So, is six days enough? Honestly, we could spend a lifetime exploring every nook and cranny of this park, but we found six days to be a decent amount of time for a family to experience a broad spectrum of what Voyageurs has to offer without feeling rushed.

Keep in mind, every family and every trip is unique. Ours might love a lengthy hike, whereas your family might prefer multiple days of boating adventures. Customize your itinerary to your family’s interests! The National Park Service website is a fantastic resource for planning; their trip ideas can be incredibly useful for first-timers to Voyageurs National Park.
