Title: How to Get From Rapid City to Mount Rushmore: A Family Adventure on the Road

Hey there, fellow family adventurers! Dane here from DoubleDeckerFam. As many of you know, my wife and I, along with our six incredible kids, have been exploring the nooks and crannies of the United States in our converted Double Decker RV. Today, I’m excited to share with you all about our journey from Rapid City to Mount Rushmore – a quintessential American road trip that you’ll want to add to your family’s travel bucket list!

Getting Ready for the Journey: Planning and Packing

Before you embark on this iconic drive, there’s a bit of planning and packing that needs to happen. First, check the weather forecast. You don’t want to be caught off-guard by the variable weather in South Dakota. Pack layers, comfortable walking shoes, and don’t forget those essential travel snacks that keep the little ones happy (trust me, you’ll thank me later).

Next, make sure your vehicle is road-trip ready. Whether you’re driving an RV like ours or a family car, a quick check-up for the engine, tires, and brakes is crucial for a smooth journey. Our lifestyle on the road has taught us that regular vehicle maintenance is key to avoiding unexpected hiccups.

The Scenic Route: Rapid City to Mount Rushmore

The great thing about this trip is that the journey from Rapid City to Mount Rushmore is a short one—only about a 30-minute drive if you take Route 16 West straight through. However, I recommend giving yourself at least a half-day for this adventure because there’s so much to see and do along the way.

  1. Start at Rapid City: Before you leave Rapid City, consider spending some time at the Dinosaur Park – a free attraction that’s a hit with kids. We had a blast wandering around the life-sized dino sculptures, and the view of the city from the park is hard to beat.
  2. Journey Through the Black Hills: As you drive out of Rapid City, you’ll enter the Black Hills National Forest. This area is home to diverse wildlife and picturesque landscapes. Keep your eyes peeled – if you’re lucky, you might spot deer or even a bison from a distance!

  3. Explore Keystone: This quaint town is nestled in the Black Hills and is worth a stop. You can grab a bite, pick up souvenirs, and explore some local attractions. The kids will love the Rushmore Tramway Adventures which offers an alpine slide among other activities.

  4. Arrival at Mount Rushmore: And finally, Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Seeing the faces of the four presidents carved into the stone is awe-inspiring, and the educational opportunities here are immense.

Making the Most of Mount Rushmore

Upon reaching Mount Rushmore, give yourself plenty of time to explore. The Presidential Trail offers up-close views of the monument and is stroller-friendly, so it’s great for families with little ones like ours. There’s also a Junior Ranger program that our older kids loved. It’s a fun way for them to learn while dressing up like rangers!

Don’t pass up the opportunity to visit the Sculptor’s Studio, where you can discover more about Gutzon Borglum, the artist behind this massive endeavor. Also, check out the evening lighting ceremony – it’s a stirring patriotic experience that leaves many visitors, including us, moved.

Dining and Accommodations: Staying a While

Many families choose to stay the night either in Keystone or back in Rapid City to fully take in the Mount Rushmore experience. There are several family-friendly lodging options ranging from hotels to lodges to campsites. Check out Travel South Dakota’s accommodations page for some great ideas.

As for dining, there are picnic areas if you choose to pack your own meals, which is our usual go-to. But if you’re wanting to dine out, there are eateries like Carver’s Café at Mount Rushmore itself, offering options with a view of the monument.

Safety and Accessibility on Your Trip

Safety is always my top priority when traveling with the family. Be sure to follow all park rules and keep an eye on the kids, as crowds near the monument can be thick, especially during peak season. Thankfully, Mount Rushmore is very accessible, with ample parking and wheelchair accessible paths, ensuring everyone in the family can experience the majesty of this national treasure.
