Is Genshin Impact Multiplayer?

Is Genshin Impact Multiplayer?

Since its launch last year, Genshin Impact has garnered a massive player base with over 40 million downloads to date. miHoYo’s free-to-play action RPG offers a large open world and frequent updates, but new players may be wondering if Genshin Impact is multiplayer.

In total, Genshin Impact is an open-world, action role-playing game with multiplayer elements. In game, players can enter co-op mode to play with up to four friends or strangers in their world. But this isn’t immediately accessible to everyone.

Taking advantage of multiplayer in Genshin allows you to fight alongside friends, or, in some cases, compete against them. Below we will go over what to expect with co-op play and what restrictions come along with it.

Is Multiplayer Available in Genshin Impact?

In short, yes, Genshin Impact does offer a multiplayer element.

Players have the option of entering co-op mode during regular play and events. During co-op mode, you can join another player’s world or accept a request for someone to join your world. PvP is another multiplayer option that is available during specific events.

However, don’t expect to jump into co-op the moment you start the game, as multiplayer is not immediately available for new players.

How To Unlock Co-op Play In Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact is a story-based game that is known for its character development and in-game lore. Therefore, you will need to progress a bit into the game before co-op mode opens to you. So how do you do this?

Genshin players run on a leveling system called Adventure Rank (AR). This is the overall level of your account and should not be confused with the levels of the individual characters in your party. Your AR determines what quests you can take on, which events you can take part in, and if you’re ready for co-op.

You need to reach Adventure Rank 16 to unlock Genshin Impact’s co-op mode.

You’ll earn Adventure Rank XP for almost anything you do in the game, so the best way to advance your rank is to play. As your rank progresses, you’ll encounter stronger enemies and get access to higher-level materials to make your party stronger. Eventually, you’ll get enough points to unlock co-op mode and even increase your World Level.

How Does World Level Impact Co-Op?

World Level is the overall difficulty of your world. As the World Level increases, the enemies you encounter will have more health and deal more damage. In turn, the loot you find will be more valuable.

For this reason, players are not allowed to enter the world of a player with a World Level that is higher than their own. However, you can enter the world of someone with a lower World Level than yours.

Each player starts at a World Level of 0. The first World Level increase happens when a player reaches Adventure Rank 20, then increases every 5 AR levels after that.

How Genshin Impact’s Co-op Works

After multiplayer unlocks, you can join other players’ games or have them join yours. Whoever’s world you are playing in will act as the host of the game.

While in another player’s world you are free to run around and play much as you would in your own world. However, there are several restrictions.

Changes in Party Size During Multiplayer

Typically, players have a party four that they can switch between during play. Depending on the number of co-op players in a session, your party’s size will decrease.

  • Two-player co-op gives access to a party of two
  • In three-player co-op, the host has two characters in their party and each visitor gets one
  • Four-player co-op allows each player one character in their party.

You Can’t Take Anything of Value

While in another player’s world, there are several things you won’t be able to do, including opening chests and picking up Oculus.

However, you will be able to collect replenishable items, like ore, fish, flowers, and anything that drops from an enemy. Keep in mind that these items do take some time to respawn, so it’s best to ask permission before taking something from someone else’s world.

Quests in Co-Op

Need help with daily commissions? Having trouble defeating Childe each week? Tired of farming domains on your own? Genshin’s co-op mode allows you to call in a friend for backup. There are restrictions on the types of quests you can complete together though.

Anything involving the main story must be done on your own and will pause once you enter co-op mode. The Spiral Abyss is a special dungeon that unlocks at AR 20 that must also be completed alone.

Multiplayer During Events

One of the major appeals of Genshin Impact is that it updates frequently, with new events showing up monthly. Depending on the type of event, players have the opportunity to complete challenges with friends or even compete against strangers in a PvP style of play.

Recently, the Windtrace event pitted players against each other in a hide-and-seek style game. This event was wildly popular among players, so it’s safe to assume that we will see more like it in the future.

Bottom Line

While Genshin Impact is well known for being an action RPG that individual players put hundreds of hours of playtime into, it is also very much a multiplayer game. Whether you prefer playing alone, with friends, or fighting alongside strangers, it’s safe to assume that miHoYo will continue to offer more multiplayer elements.
