Why Do Evangelicals Wear Skirts?

As an Evangelical, I started wearing skirts when I was a child because that’s what my parents taught me. I’ve always known why I have to do this as my family explained to me the importance of it, so here’s an explanation to everyone who was wondering.

So, why do Evangelicals wear skirts? It is stated in the Bible that God doesn’t want men and women wear the same type of clothes. Deuteronomy 22:5 KJV – A woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.

This verse is quite unusual as it doesn’t directly say men shouldn’t dress as women, and women shouldn’t dress like men. Instead, it states that there should be a contrast between the two. But this is not the only reason evangelical women wear skirts, so if you’re interested in other explanations, keep reading!

The Reasons Behind Wearing Skirts

  1. Wearing Skirts Adorns Women in a Modest Apparel

It might be not a very important reason for you, but in my opinion, it is as significant as the first one. Skirts and dresses cover women in a modest yet beautiful way. That’s why I would never trade that for a pair of pants as they’re not even comparable to the gorgeous and lady-like look of apparel.

What’s more, the modest apparel also reflects the godliness of a woman. “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves into modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broider hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.” – Timothy 2:9-10 

As for me, being a woman is something to be proud of. God planned to make me one, and I want to embrace it as much as possible. And both skirts and dresses help me with that as I can enrich my femininity.

Plus, my kids and husband always tell me how gorgeous I look! That’s definitely something to be happy about.

  • A Woman Who Wears A Skirt Is Always Considered A Christian

As it became fashionable to wear pants and jeans for both sexes, it is extremely easy to distinguish a Christian from others. I met so many interesting people who were random strangers inquiring about my unusual and then starting to talk about the Bible. I was also able to meet other Evangelists and make new friends among Christians.

Not only my outfit is beautiful and modest, but it also brings lots of meaningful conversation in my daily life. I can’t say I meet interesting people every day, but it definitely happens often.

I personally love that I stand out in the crowd. To everyone its own, but I enjoy showing what religion I belong to.

  • Skirts Are Actually Very Comfortable

Whenever I discuss skirts with other women, they always tell me that this type of clothing is not as comfortable as pants for everyday life because they can’t move freely in them. But let me tell you something: I can ride a horse, run, babysit, and do any activity that women who wear pants can. The skirt doesn’t limit me in any way.

The only thing is that you need to get used to it. In order to do that, start by wearing it at home for two or three days in a row. You might be surprised not only when you find out how actually comfortable it is, but also by your family’s reaction.

I’m not trying to force or persuade anyone, but if this is something you’re interested in, I hope you’ll take my advice and give it a try!

  • A Woman In A Long Skirt Doesn’t Provoke Sinful Thoughts In Others

This is probably the most obvious one. A woman who wears long skirts (and modest clothing in general) doesn’t provoke lustful thoughts in other men.

There are a lot of people who struggle with lust, and the best women can do is to dress appropriately on order to not to provoke somebody and make them stumble on their way to God.

That’s why it is good to dress in a way that doesn’t tempt our neighbors or people from the community. Not only it’ll emphasize your inner beauty and personality, but also make it less difficult for others to stay on the path of God.

How Are The Women Who Don’t Wear Skirts Treated?

I can’t speak for every Church that exists in this world, but the majority of them won’t accept these women as real Christians. Deuteronomy 22:5 KJV – A woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.

I added this passage in order to explain in depth. I know this is an Old Testament law, which means it’s not necessary to follow it. However, this law is different from other. How? Let me explain it.

If you take a closer look, this verse contains an interesting word – an abomination. Whenever God was giving the law, He addressed it as an abomination, and I don’t know about you, but I’d prefer to follow it even if it’s not necessarily something I have to do.

I might be wrong in my interpretation of the verse, but because it says, “for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God,” I wouldn’t risk with something like this.

Still, I don’t want to say it is a good fit for everyone, and women can be modest even when wearing pants. I personally know some women who are Christians and prefer to wear pants. I wouldn’t do that, but it’s their choice. Plus, it doesn’t diminish their great personalities in anyways.

However, what I don’t like is that they were called sinners or humiliating names. Everyone can achieve modesty in their own way, and what works for one person won’t necessarily work for others.

I might have a strong opinion on this topic, but I still allow others to have a choice and try not to judge them. I hope other members of our Church will be able to do the same. 

What About The Hair?

“Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? {14} Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? {15} But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for covering.” – Corinthians 11:14-15

This passage tells the reader right away that the long hair for a woman is something to be proud about. Not only it is gorgeous in the eyes of God but also allows a woman to cover her head and face when needed.  On the opposite hand, this verse says that it is unnatural for a man to grow long hair and considered a shame in God’s eyes.

In contrast to skirts, many Christian women wear long hair as they want to honor God and project a Godly image.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, every Evangelical (or Christian) woman who wears modest clothes and long hair reflects godliness in her appearance. Plus, it helps to emphasize their femininity and lady-like look.  

But if a woman decides to wear pants (which still make her look modest), she’s not really considered a real Christian.

I don’t particularly like this point as some of my Christian girlfriends prefer to wear pants but their spirit is truly Christian, but to everyone its own.
