Minecraft Skins: What Are They, and How Do You Change Them?

If you’ve been playing Minecraft and you are tired of walking around as Steve or Alex, it might be time to change your skin. However, if you’re new to the game, you may be wondering what skins are and how exactly do you change them?

Minecraft skins allow players to customize the look of their Minecraft avatar using textures that are placed on the player model. In addition, players can purchase and apply new skins while playing to change their character’s appearance in-game.

Customizing the game is a huge part of Minecraft play. If you’re ready to make your character your own, read on to find out how to change your Minecraft skin, no matter which device you play on.

What Are Minecraft Skins?

Every Minecraft player starts with one of two default skins known as “Steve” or “Alex.” A Minecraft skin is simply a texture that is applied to the character avatar to customize its in-game appearance. While players are free to keep the default skin, you also have the option to change it.

One of the best aspects of Minecraft is that the world can be customized to your desire. Skins allow you to bring this customization to your character.

How To Change Your Minecraft Skin

If you want to change your skin, you will need to download one first. Don’t worry; this is a fairly easy process, and there are various ways to find the perfect skin, depending on which device you use.

Changing Your Minecraft Skin on PC

If you play Minecraft on PC, you’ll be excited to hear that there is a large collection of skins available to you. You can even create your own skin once you get comfortable enough, but we’ll stick to the basics here.

To change your skin on Minecraft for PC, first, purchase your desired skin from a third-party Minecraft skin website and download the skin to your computer. While there are many dedicated sites where you can find skins, two of the most popular are MinecraftSkins and Skindex. When saving the file, make sure to save the file in an easy place so you can find it later.

Next, with your game closed, go to Minecraft.net, log onto your account, and access your profile page. From here, navigate to the “Skin” tab and choose the “+” icon to add a new skin. Find the file of the downloaded skin on your computer and select it.

If the upload was successful, you would see the skin show up on the page. You can now load into the game and wear your skin.

Changing Skins in Minecraft on Your Console

If you are playing Minecraft on a console, you’ll notice that your options for skins are much more limited. There isn’t a way to downland and store files on the console like you would on a computer, so you’ll have to choose from a range of free and paid skins that are readily available in Minecraft.

The way you change your skin may vary slightly depending on the console you’re using, but the steps are pretty much the same.

To start, open up Minecraft on your console. In the main menu, select Help & Options>Change Skin on Playstation, or click “X” to enter the “Dressing Room” on Xbox.

Here you can scroll through the skins available and choose one to apply to your character. If the skin you select isn’t free, you will be redirected to your console’s store to purchase it.

Changing Your Skin on Mobile Minecraft

Minecraft Pocket Edition (PE) is the game’s mobile version that can be downloaded to your device through the Google Playstore or Apple store.

Changing your skin on Minecraft PE is similar to the PC version with some limitations. You would start by downloading your desired skin to your device from a third-party site.

Once you have the file saved, open the Minecraft app and make sure you’re signed in to your Minecraft account. On the title screen, tap the “Profile” button located on the right side below your Minecraft character. Tap the left and right arrows to pick which character you want to change, then tap “edit character.”

Once you are in the character editor screen, tap the classic skins tab (the tab with the two characters on it) to customize your character. Select Owned>Import>Choose New Skin and select the file of the skin you wish to import. Once the file is uploaded, it should now be on your character.

Final Thoughts

Adding new skins to your avatar adds another level of customization to your Minecraft world. Since there are plenty of characters to choose from, you can change the day by day until you find one that most suits your taste.
